“Gödel Leaves Vienna” was written
in the Fall and Winter of 2005–06. The piece was inspired by
a passage from fellow Minnesotan Bob
Dylan’s book Chronicles:
If you’re using the [diatonic] scale, and you hit 2, 5 and 7 to the phrase and then repeat it, a melody forms.
I came up with a 12-tone row based on what I thought Dylan might have meant by this passage (like many other things Dylan has said, what exactly he meant has been a subject of heated debate in online Dylan forums), and used this in writing the bass part. (I also thought of calling this piece “Desolation Row”, but that seemed a bit obvious.)
